When you have thick grease and dirt that needs to be cleaned, you can use solvents to do this effectively and clean whatever it is you are cleaning. You can use many different solvents, with each having various properties and can be used with different surfaces to clean them effectively. You must ensure that you use the correct solvent for the cleaning job you are doing, and below, you can find some more information on this and things to do and not do when using solvents for cleaning.

    The Different Types Of Solvents

You must ensure that you use the correct type of solvent for the cleaning job you are attempting and using the wrong one can damage the surface of what you are cleaning. Some of the common solvents that people use to clean can include:

MEK: MEK is an excellent solvent that is perfect for cleaning tools and equipment, but it can damage paints and plastics, so use it cautiously.

Mineral Spirits/Paint Thinner: You should never use this solvent to clean the surface of things, as it can damage them and leave an oily residue. You should only use this solvent cleaner on equipment and tools, and there are selling restrictions on this type of solvent.

Acetone: Acetone is a widely available solvent that you can use to clean surfaces and tools, and equipment. However, you must be careful as it can damage surfaces and is mildly aggressive, so use it with caution.

Xylene: Xylene is an aggressive solver cleaner that will damage various surfaces when you use it for cleaning if you are not careful. It is ideal for cleaning tools and equipment, but the sale of this solvent is restricted, so it is not freely available.

Alcohol: Alcohol is another solvent cleaner commonly used and suitable for cleaning various surfaces. You would not typically use this for cleaning tools and equipment, and the sale of it is controlled.

    Using Your Preferred Solvent

When using solvents to clean, no matter which one you select, you must follow the guidelines precisely and ensure you use them correctly. You will want to use the solvent cleaner in a well-ventilated and clean space to prevent dust and dirt from getting on the clean surfaces. When using a solvent cleaner on a material for the first time, use a rag and apply a small amount to see if there are any reactions before applying it to the entire surface. You will also want to avoid using the solvent cleaner in areas with open flames as they are highly flammable and can go up in flames quickly. Ensure that you use the correct safety gear when using solvent cleaners, and you will want to wear safety glasses and gloves.

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines of what you are cleaning, and whatever solvent you choose, avoid saturating the surface you want to clean. Take your time and do some research, and you can quickly clean items without causing damage to them and letting the solvent you choose to use do all the work for you.
